AMSTERDAM

This past weekend was probably the best 3 days of my life…because I spent them in Amsterdam.  As you all know, the whole mystique about the city is that marijuana is legal, as is prostitution.  What you don’t know, though, is that you are wrong.  Hookers ARE legal. Pot, however, isn’t “legal” it is just “tolerated and decriminalized.”  It’s a big legal loophole or something.

In any case, after spending what seemed like eternity on the train from London to Brussels, and the Brussels to Amsterdam, I set foot outside the station, and was instantly hit with warm, inviting sunshine.  As I walked around with my friends trying desperately to find our living quarters (all the street names were in Dutch, as was our map), I got a sense of why this place is so amazing.  The city is like a grid…only instead of major streets, there are canals. I also noticed that nobody really drove anywhere..they rode bikes or Vespas. There was even a bike lane on most streets with higher foot-traffic.

Once we finally asked someone for directions, got to our room, and got situated, it was time to walk and explore.  Our first stop was All Day Cafe.  I made my first ID-required marijuana purchase (Chocolope) and went upstairs and rolled up a nice j, sparked, and was in the clouds. People weren’t kidding when they said that the pot was stronger.  After finishing, my friend Nai and I walked around outside, eventually sitting by a canal and just watching the boats go by.  Every boat seemed to have people partying on it.  Then we went home and passed out.

I woke up the next morning and sat on the front steps, got high, and watched the city begin to start its day. I also caught the tail-end of the sunrise, which was pretty sweet.  After we ate breakfast, I set off to explore. I found one of the stores I was looking for, but then got tragically lost when going to another.  I was wandering around for 2 hours, and finally stumbled upon the Dolphins Cafe, where I was told I could find some Northern Lights (they had it, and it is incredible).

That night I went to the Anne Frank House.  That museum is such a sombering place.  It was so surreal walking through the place where 8 people hid for 2 years.  They couldn’t talk, walk around, or make any other noises during the daytime, and never saw any natural sunlight.  It just puts everything about that time period into a perspective I had never dreamed of before. After that, I went to meet my friend at a restaurant, and on the way saw a hooker walking around without a shirt. Hello free titties. On the way home, I also witnessed a man walking out of a brothel, and then further down the road, watched as an older gentleman rang the bell, had the maiden come to the door and tell him the price, and then he said “OK” and handed her the money, and walked inside.

The next day it was time to leave.  I needed to finish up my stash (G-13 x Amnesia Haze) so I went to breakfast, and got pancakes.  Then I just went to the train station and hung around until my train came.  From there I don’t remember alot, cuz I was stoned, and I passed out on the train.  Same thing going from Brussels to London.

All in all, it was a weekend well spent.  I can honestly say that Amsterdam is the perfect city for the things that go on there..due in large part to its natural beauty, and its pact to keep to the old style, at least in the Jordaan section.  I am already planning a return trip, because there was so much I didn’t get to explore in my short time there.

If you’d like, here are some pictures.

til next time…peace

London City Crest

So, I’ve been in London for 3 weeks now, and I’ve been chatting with friends back home on and off, but there are just so many people I miss chilling with that I needed a better way to tell them all about my trip.  My buddy Peoples just started a blog, which reminded me that last fall I had to make this page for Intro to Media Tech class. Now I’ve decided to revive it, for the sole purpose of describing the wild time that has been, and is, London, England.

The first thing I saw when I got off the tube (not the subway) and exited the station was a Lamborghini dealership.  I could already tell this was going to be interesting.  So far (as far as I can remember) I have seen 14 Lamborghinis, 11 Ferraris, 27 Bentleys, 32 Porsches, 7 Rolls Royce Phantoms, 2 Maybachs, 10 Maseratis, and 2 Audi R8s.  The people here really like expensive automobiles.

The classes I have to take are, to say the least, barely that.  Professor Dustin Morrow is honestly the best teacher I have ever had in my tenure at Temple–he’s just like us.  Heck, he even gave me HIS map of Amsterdam from when he went earlier this summer and marked down places to go for my trip next weekend.

The nightlife here is wild, to say the least.  The first couple weeks were spent going out every night and exploring parts of the city.  We found it hard to adjust to the schedule here at first, as most pubs close at 11pm.  But, once we started branching out more and going to clubs, we could stay out later.  I will say that London’s Chinese food is amazing, and especially when at 1am you can still sit down at a restaurant and order a Crispy Duck Platter.

The best time I have had so far, though, is the graffiti tour my roommate and I took this past Friday.  I bought a book of locations for Banksy artwork, and we set out tag-hunting (it’s worth noting that most of his tags have been painted over, sandblasted, buffed, or covered with wooden boards).  We were bummed to find that many of the most elegant pieces had been taken away from us, but the ones we did find were rather incredible. I made a facebook album of the tour, which you can all look at here.

All in all, London so far has been an incredible experience.  I can’t begin to explain how lucky I feel that Temple offers this program, and I was accepted into it.  The next two and a half weeks are shaping up to be pretty epic, especially with that Amsterdam trip looming next weekend.  Don’t worry, there will certainly be a couple coffeeshop blogs if I can find internet service.  If not, I’ll be sure to update when I’m back.

Until then, be easy and enjoy those last few weeks of summer.

peace,

This is the link to a podcast I created in Avid. Using a 30 minute interview of raw audio, I trimmed it down and selected certain parts to use. Then I added some soft jazz underneath the audio. The song is called ‘Five Minutes to Midnight’, and is off of the album ‘Pilgrimage’, by Michael Brecker.

This is a video edit I did in Avid from a bunch of different clips taken from this interview with Ike Johnstone. He explains what he does at the Bill Pickett Riding Academy, as well as where he used to work, and his views on life.

This is my community photo assignment. The photos were taken over the course of my sophomore year here at Temple. They are from my trip to Israel with students from Philadelphia-area schools, a hockey game at my house in New Jersey, and various pictures from my fraternity’s semi-formal.
